Kitty Cash is gearing up to release her most personal project yet

Written by on 02/05/2023

Kitty Cash has seen it all. As a DJ, producer and multi-hyphenate creative, she’s hit the decks for all your favourite artists — including Rihanna, A$AP Rocky and Solange — and DJed some of the most exciting fashion parties of recent times. The latest, of course, being i-D and Marc Jacobs’ ‘Pre-Party’ at Coachella just a few weeks ago.

Alongside Zack Bia, Fivio Foreign and Lil Durk, the Brooklyn-born and LA-based artist brought the energy poolside in the desert — wearing Marc Jacobs Kiki Boots, no less. While we’re still dreaming of the California sunshine and Kitty’s buzzy late afternoon set, she’s been hard at work on her first album, which calls her most personal project yet: one that’s guaranteed to be “fun, energetic, emotional”, and entirely her own. Inspired by the process of putting out Kitty’s World, an IGTV series created to challenge stereotypes of the Black community in American society, we can’t wait to see what’s next.

Here, we caught up with Kitty to find out a bit more about the project, how fashion informs her process and that killer party look!

Hi Kitty! How are you doing? Are you back in LA now?
Hey, I’m good… a little all over the place… I’m in New York City at the moment.

You kicked off our ‘Pre-Party’ with Marc Jacobs at Coachella. Tell us about your fit.
I loved that party! I was wearing a Vaquera bralet, Rick Owens shorts and the iconic Marc Jacobs Kiki boots.

When did you first start working with Marc Jacobs? And what does Marc Jacobs mean to you?
I started working with MJ a few years ago. I would say Marc Jacobs as a brand is free-spirited, uninhibited and iconic.

Have you always been interested in fashion? How would you describe your relationship with fashion?
Fashion has always been a part of my DNA. I love every aspect of fashion… the textiles, the concepts, the history, the business… it has always been a space of intrigue to me.

During the pandemic, you started working on your very first album of original music. What’s the vibe? How would you describe it?
Since the pandemic, I’ve actually created two projects… that will never see the light of day. Ha! That’s the beauty of art — some of it is really just for your process. In terms of my upcoming project, I would say it’s fun, it’s energetic, it’s emotional, it’s me.

What’s been the most rewarding part of that process?
Learning. I have learned so much about myself, my integrity, my drive, my perseverance, my patience, but ultimately that [creation] is a constant process with no real rules or blueprint… it just is.

You’ve said that your IGTV series Kitty’s World was the prelude to the album. Tell us about that project, and how the two relate to one another.
Kitty’s World is the unveiling of the parts of me that I usually don’t share. The avatar serves as a sociopolitical metaphor that challenges the stereotypes of the Black community in American society. Each episode of the show offers social commentary on contemporary issues both past and present within the Black community — embracing and championing unapologetic Blackness, our rich culture, history and unique vernacular.

It also serves as a layer of myself that I’m usually not comfortable in sharing, as the project represents another layer of myself as well. Both projects allow an inside perspective of my mental landscape — on all facets of my mind and spirit.
