Obrafour vs Drake: Ghanaian Rap Legend Takes Legal Action Over Copyright Infringement

Ghanaian rapper and hip-life legend Obrafour is taking legal action against Canadian rapper Drake for allegedly infringing on his work. According to reports, Drake sampled Obrafour’s song “Oye Ohene (Remix)” in his track “Calling My Name” without proper permission, prompting the veteran rapper to sue for copyright infringement.
The lawsuit comes after Drake had reportedly sought permission to use the sample, but was denied by Obrafour. Despite this, the track was released just days later, without Obrafour’s consent or authorization.

“Oye Ohene (Remix)” is a classic Ghanaian hip-life song, and Obrafour is considered one of the pioneers of the genre. The song features fellow Ghanaian rapper Tinny, and has been a popular anthem in Ghana since its release in 2009.
The alleged infringement by Drake has sparked outrage among many Ghanaian music fans, who see it as an attempt to exploit and profit from Ghanaian culture without giving proper credit or compensation. Obrafour’s decision to take legal action against Drake is seen as a bold move to protect his intellectual property and the integrity of Ghanaian music.
The lawsuit is being handled by the UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK.
