Top Ghanaian A-list artistes who have in recent times discovered their doppelgängers have come out to express concern over how they have began playing shows and making money off their hard earned brand.

Ghanaian artist, Medikal, has spoken out against the issue of impersonation in the entertainment industry, particularly the growing trend of individuals claiming to be look-alikes of popular artists such as himself, Mr. Drew, King Promise, and Kumasi Eugene.

During his performance at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Xperience 2023, Medikal made it clear that these individuals are not to be mistaken for the real artistes.

“Those look-alike guys are impersonators. That’s what they are,” Medikal stated firmly.

“If you want to make it in this life, don’t be like someone else because you can be better than them. Be your pop ur f**king self,” he added.

Moreover, Joshua Kojo Ampah, a member of the Keche duo has threatened to mercilessly deal with anyone who will claim to be a Keche lookalike.

His anger was generated following reports on social media about how some gentlemen have claimed to be the lookalike of Kuami Eugene, King Promise, Mr. Drew and Medikal.

It also circulated that, these acclaimed lookalikes do not only imitate the style of the celebrities but also perform their songs at events.

Joshua of Keche took to his twitter page to warn anyone who is trying to imitate their personality or perform their songs to desist from it or else, he is going to mercilessly deal with them.

“So now the lookalike or whatever they are called now have the vim to diss Medikal and King Promise online. Listen if you look like Joshua or you look like Andrews, you should remain wherever you are. If I see any lookalike Keche Joshua or use me in your song, the way I will beat”.

The singer expressed his worries over how these lookalikes will continue to use their songs to perform at events.

He lamented: “What pains me is that, we are not done releasing songs which means that, so far as we produce the songs, their will also continue to perform with our songs.

Furthermore, in a slightly different case of impersonation, Ghanaian Reggae/Dancehall artiste, Epixode, has opened up about his decision to part ways with his former manager, Exhibit.

In an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy Prime, Epixode explained that his manager had misused his social media pages for commercial purposes without his consent, which was detrimental to his brand’s reputation.

“Per what our lawyers wrote, there was a sort of impersonation and it was not good for our brand. Because of the kind of work we do, we actually engage with people so I happened to have businesses with people that I didn’t know about as Epixode, I didn’t think it is good for the brand,” he said.

According to Epixode, his team had no knowledge of the unauthorized businesses that were conducted in his name, leading to a breach of trust. Despite this setback, Epixode acknowledges that Exhibit played a positive role in his career.

“because he was handling my social media pages he had had businesses in the name of Epixode which the whole team didn’t know about and it was not looking good as time went on so we all had a very good understanding that we needed to move on.”

Epixode announced the termination of their agreement on November 11, 2022, through his lawyers. He said that the team as a whole made the decision, not just him.

Ankoma Mensah & Associates, Epixode’s attorneys, penned the statement in November 2022. Ezhitbit would no longer serve as Epixode’s manager, agent, or representative, nor would he be involved with the company’s brand.

They cautioned the public against doing business with, talking about, or engaging in any activity that would harm or have an impact on the previous manager’s reputation for Epixode.

Also, talented Ghanaian rapper, Emmanuel Kwamina Amonoo well recognized as Quamina MP in the music industry has disclosed that he has had his share of the ongoing look- alike craze in the music fraternity.

According to him, his look alike has impersonated him on several occasions which has also affected his (Quamina) brand.

Speaking in an interview over the weekend on United Television, on the current trend of some individuals claiming to be lookalikes of Ghanaian artistes, including Mr Drew, Kidi, Kuami Eugene as well as Medikal, the record producer asserted that his look-alike did not only imitate his style and mannerisms but went on to perform his songs at some number of events including a D-Black event that got him kicked off the stage which eventually made headlines.

In the words of Quamina, “I saw a news headline that said Quamina MP sacked from stage at Kasoa during D Black’s event and it shocked me. I was wondering if I was there or not.”

“And the guy really looks like me, so I was doubting if it was really me. The guy was performing when a bouncer carried him off the stage and the headline was very bad at least if the people knew it was my look-alike, then it’ll not be bad PR,” he emphasized

The ‘Party’ hitmaker lamented that the situation had escalated resulting in the lookalike performing on stage and scamming fans in the process.

According to him, “Just last week in Koforidua, I was supposed to perform at a show in a secondary school, before I got on stage the lookalike had gone to perform in my name. I was told that the students were angry after he performed for a few minutes and left before I came. This is the issue I have with my look-alike, and he is also creating skits which malign my brand.”

Kuami Eugene has also spoken out on the matter and entreated the parties involved to desist from earning off his hard earned image.

Stonebwoy also joined Medikal on a TikTok live feed to discuss about the menace and added his voice in support of Medikal’s advocacy to ensure these lookalikes make a living for themselves and not hide under anyone’s image and reputation.
