Hong Kong Welsh Choral Group to Perform Live in Malaysia
Written by ABR on 22/09/2023
The Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir, which stemmed from an impromptu singing of Welsh songs around the piano at the St David’s Society Annual Ball in 1977, has come a long way.
Scheduled to perform at the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia Campus this coming Sept. 30, the choir has steadily grown in scope and reputation since 1978.
Besides headlining more than 20 events in Hong Kong each year, they make annual visits to Thailand and the Philippines and have also performed around Asia in Mainland China, Malaysia and Vietnam.
Having performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues including London’s Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House in Australia, their most favoured program – from traditional Welsh hymns and Mozart to modern renditions of ABBA and Queen – also features music in Latin, Chinese and even Swahili.
Peter Stapleton is the choir’s current music director.
On Sept. 19 this year, the choir marks the exact 45th Anniversary of its first-ever rehearsal at Victoria Barracks in 1978.
