For his fifth studio album Tequila Ever After, singer Adekunle Gold arrived at a formula for recording sessions: “It is about where I am mentally,” he tells Apple Music. “What is my soul saying? What is my life at that point? What am I feeling? What vibe am I on? What sounds am I enjoying?” The title is a reference to Gold’s new-found love for tequila, the Mexican staple which he discovered during trips to Los Angeles, where the majority of this album was recorded. “I was a rum guy, I was a whisky guy before but, nah, tequila’s taken over,” he explains. “That’s why I call myself ‘Tio Tequila’.”
The pleasures of drinking aside, for the Nigerian singer, tequila become an elixir, which he uses to ease himself into moments of creative contemplation. “It starts with a conversation,” says Gold. “You book a 12-hour session, and then you talk for five or six hours. Then we start making beats. And then once I hear the sound I like, I get into spirit, my melodies.”
On Tequila Ever After, Gold’s new affair with tequila and therapy-inspired sessions are coupled with stellar collaborations with producers and artists who draw from Malian guitar blues, South African soul, Jamaican dancehall and American pop and hip-hop. He jokingly describes the combination as “Afrobeat Pro Max”, a bigger and better version of his previous albums. “I hope people enjoy life more. I know it’s crazy to say that in a world where people are dealing with a lot of things,” says Gold, “but I’ve learned that it’s not the event, it’s how you react to it. And I’ve chosen to react to life as ‘Tequila Ever After’ and I hope that you do as well.”

Bella Shmurda – DND (Full Album)

Bella Shmurda quickly follows his successful singles and collab release run with a hugely anticipated E.P. The 6 track project is meticulously curated to usher in a refreshing sound into the soundscape and reinstate him as the legitimate Prince of Afrobeats. The project highlights different sides of Bella Shmurda and reflects his growth and evolution. The project features heavyweights like Tiwa Savage, Pheelz, and Lil Kesh.

Cheque – Chequemate
Since breaking through with 2020’s “Zoom”, Cheque has stood out among Afropop’s newest generation of stars for the sonic choices that propelled his breakout project, Razor. Working with a distinct sonic palette that couches his traditionalist rap flows into sure-footed doses of saccharine earworms and heart-wrenching melodies, the sing-rapping hybrid (born Akanbi Bamidele Brett) is adept at bending influences from cloud-rap, emo-pop and Afrobeats into something wholly transformative and incisive all at once. The release of his debut LP, 2022’s Bravo, expanded on his public narrative while adding more exciting twists to his fusionist sound.
On his latest project, Chequemate, the Penthauze rapper continues to deftly sidestep categorisation while fine-tuning the formula that has made him one of Nigeria’s most highly regarded musicians. Recorded in an exciting blend of Yoruba, English and pidgin, this six-tracker sees Cheque contemplate destiny, romantic affiliations and his place in the game over midtempo instrumentals mostly crafted by talented beatsmith Ozedikus. “Shine” is a call to stay the course, while close friend Fireboy DML joins for another installation of their collaborative efforts on “Hustler”. There is a prominent hip-hop bounce on “Way Too Young”, where Cheque explains that he’s too young to be stressed, while “LPD” is a dedication to his fans and supporters. At its best and most engaging, Chequemate is a charming reminder of Cheque’s knack for crafting genre-fluid bops that live long in the memory, as he does on “Sunflawa” in tandem with Mavin singer Crayon.

Kizz Daniel – Maverick (Album)
Kizz Daniel arrived fully formed. Since lasering his way into the Nigerian mainstream with his 2014 hit single, “Woju”, the singer has maintained a definitive grip on the pulse of popular African music with a sound that is as pithy as it is declarative. A combination of the singer’s iconoclastic public profile and an unbeatable knack for deftly melding influences from hip-hop, pop, and R&B into his no-frills Afropop interpretation has made Kizz Daniel (Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe) an unavoidable fixture on the Afropop scene. New Era, Kizz’s highly regarded debut album that’s widely seen as one of the best in the genre’s contemporary history, set the stage for a two-album run from No Bad Songz to King Of Love that placed the singer on a pedestal.
Things further kicked up a notch for the noticeably-reclusive singer following the release of 2021’s Barnabas. His 2022 singles “Buga (Lo Lo Lo)” and “Cough (Odo)” brought his svelte voice into the global arena. On his 2023 album, Maverick, the singer continues to play at his own pre-determined pace. Rather than make a synchronised attempt at global stardom, Kizz is as keen as ever to invert such expectations and draw the world to him on his own terms as he wholeheartedly embraces his role as Afropop’s leading maverick.
The songs on album number four reflect of the singer’s worldview as he continues to make rich soul-pop fusions crafted in his signature sonorous Afropop croon. “My G” is a playful plea to be allowed to carry out his business as he pleases, while “One Dollar” is an innovative detour for the singer who accelerates his flow to match a jaunty opening by rapper Blaqbonez. As always, love plays a crucial role in forming the narrative of Maverick but, here, the singer’s reflections on love extend to involve his children, who make an appearance on “Feran You Two” before he emotionally declares his devotion to them.

Stonebwoy ft. Russ – Life & Money (Remix)
Renowned Ghanaian singer and songwriter Stonebwoy continues to make waves in the music industry, and he shows no signs of slowing down. Amidst his ongoing tour, the multiple award-winning artist is stirring up even more excitement for his highly acclaimed ‘5th Dimension’ album by releasing a captivating remix from the project. This time, he collaborates with American rapper Russ on the song titled ‘Life & Money.’
Originally featuring Stormzy on the album’s original version, ‘Life & Money’ serves as the powerful opener for the album, setting the tone for an incredible musical journey. Now, with the addition of Russ’s dynamic flow and energy, the remix promises to be a thrilling fusion of African and American musical influences.
