Tencent Penguin Pictures & BBC Studios partner to release China’s beautiful animal landscape

Tencent Penguin Pictures partnered with BBC Studios to co-produce a new nature documentary. 

In 2019, BBC Studios signed a co-production deal with Chinese firms Tencent Penguin Pictures and the state-run China Media Group CCTV9 for its new natural history series “Seven Worlds, One Planet.”

The series looked at how animal life and behavior have been shaped by the unique environmental circumstances of each of our seven continents. In Asia, it will look more at animals living at the extremes, while in Europe, it will delve into unexpected wildlife living closer to home.

The British broadcaster started working with CCTV9 as early as 2008, when they co-produced the series “Wild China.” They have since collaborated on projects such as “Africa,” “Blue Planet II,” and, most recently, “Dynasties.” Thus, the deal is a continuation of a long and growing partnership between BBC Studios and the Chinese firms.

Shilun Shi, CCTV9’s programming department director believes that this collaboration can bring original and premium documentaries to audiences in China, added: “We are looking forward to deepening our working relationship with BBC Studios on more fruitful and successful projects and believe it will help benefit the whole industry.”

“By partnering with companies of this caliber we are able to bring the BBC’s world class natural history to Chinese audiences and invest in the next generation of landmark natural history programs,” said David Weiland, EVP of BBC Studios’ Asia.

Co-production with BBC America, ZDF, and France Televisions saw the documentary broadcast in China simultaneously on both CCTV and Tencent in late 2019.

Chinese online giant Tencent Holdings set up film production house Penguin Pictures in 2015. According to local media reports, the company said that it is to focus on producing online dramas with a minority investment in some 10-15 movies per year as it eyes the development of its own pool of artists.

Biao Ren: Blades of The Guardians an upcoming historical action animation series, based on the original work by Chinese manhua jia Xianzhe Xu, has recently gotten a new trailer. The manhua was first released in July 2015 and serialized in Manga DX. As of last year, it had at least 8 published volumes and over 100 chapters.

The series follows the warrior protagonist, Dāomǎ a highly skilled mercenary with a strong sense of honor who travels across Ancient China and makes a living by his sword.

The Chinese anime adaptation is produced by film distributor Tencent Penguin Pictures with animation production by Colored Pencil Animation Group.
