Obrafour – Drake lawsuit: Mantse, Ayisha Modi bent on sucking potential $10m wealthy Obrafour dry!

Written by on 20/04/2023

In a rather new twist following the widespread news of legendary Ghanaian Hiplife act, Obrafour suing A-list US-based artiste, Drake, Ayisha Modi & Mantse have bared their teeth at the ace Ghanaian rapper.

Mantse Nii Aryeequaye has called out Obrafour over his suit against Drake for sampling his song without his permission.

In a court document that has surfaced online, the Ghanaian rapper is demanding $10 million from Drake for sampling his ‘Oye Ohene’ Remix on his track, ‘Calling My Name’ without seeking permission from him.

The part of Obrafour’s song that Drake sampled is a soundbite that says “killer cut” which Mantse has come out to say that it is his voice.

Mike @iamobrafour please tell your coons I’ve been trying to get you to meet my lawyers since @Drake released that song. You cannot claim compensation on my intellectual property that you also didn’t pay for. We can revert to what I suggested last year and keep it moving.— #ChaleWote2023 (@Accradotalt) April 19, 2023

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Chale Wote Street Arts Festival, who was into music years back, Obrafour cannot claim ownership of the soundbite because he wasn’t paid for it.

“Hi Mike @iamobrafour I’m disappointed at your actions. Would be good to tell the public the truth about this matter or I will be forced to lay out how you’ve never paid a dime for any of my works on your songs over the last 20yr,” he tweeted.

For the record @iamobrafour filed a law suit to lay claim to my intellectual property without notification. Mike I expect you to tell the truth about this matter or I will .— #ChaleWote2023 (@Accradotalt) April 19, 2023

In another tweet, he continued that “Mike @iamobrafour please tell your coons I’ve been trying to get you to meet my lawyers since @Drake released that song. You cannot claim compensation on my intellectual property that you also didn’t pay for. We can revert to what I suggested last year and keep it moving“.

“For the record @iamobrafour filed a law suit to lay claim to my intellectual property without notification. Mike I expect you to tell the truth about this matter or I will,” he emphasized in the tweets below.

American lawyer, Rob Freund, who broke the news said “today, @iamobrafour sued @Drake for copyright infringement for sampling “Oye Ohene (Remix)” in the track “Calling My Name.”

5. @Drake I wish to convey firmly as owner of the right and request
that you consult my lawyer Kofi Bentil kbentil@lexpraxis.netbefore you take any steps regarding claims for compensation for the use of the intellectual property of Mantse Aryeequaye. You’ve been notified.— #ChaleWote2023 (@Accradotalt) April 19, 2023

“Obrafour says Drake’ previously sought permission to use the work, didn’t get it, and released the track days later anyway,” he added as she shared the legal documents addressed to the Southern District Court Of New York.

Excerpts of Obrafour’s suit reads “on June 13, 2022, Obrafour had not yet responded to the June 8, 2022 Clearance Email, and Mannis-Gardner sent Obrafour a follow-up email simply stating, “Hi confirming you received this email thanks (sic]” (the “June 13, 2022 Clearance Email”). The June 13, 2022

4. @Drake This is to confirm I [Mantse Aryeequaye] insist that although @IamObrafuor has interest in the matter, he is not the owner of the right, and cannot assert it, definitely not alone, or make any demands for sole compensation for its use.— #ChaleWote2023 (@Accradotalt) April 19, 2023

Clearance Email is annexed hereto as EXHIBIT D. 39. On June 17, 2022, a fourteen-song studio album entitled “Honestly, Nevermind” by Drake was released by Defendants Drake, OVO, Republic, and Universal, only hours after

3. @Drake my lawyer Kofi Bentil esq. of Lex Praxis Incorporated kbentil@lexpraxis.net who is pursuing this matter has informed me of a lawsuit against you solely in the name of @IamObrafuor .— #ChaleWote2023 (@Accradotalt) April 19, 2023

Drake and OVO announced the album on social media. In doing so, Drake, OVO, Republic, and Universal released “Honestly, Nevermind” pursuant to an increasingly prevalent ‘surprise’ model for high-profile commercial album releases, whereby an album is suddenly released by ‘surprise’. i.e., either with little or no notice or promotion to the consuming public. This ‘surprise“.

. @Drake I Mantse Aryeequaye maintain my intellectual property rights and claim over all my artistic works including the “Killer Cut” sound you sampled off “Oye Ohene” remix used on Obrafuor’s album.— #ChaleWote2023 (@Accradotalt) April 19, 2023

Furthermore, Ayisha Modi, a Ghanaian businesswoman, has criticized Obrafuor for suing Drake without first repaying her investment in his album 13 years ago.

Ayisha Modi alleged that she supported the production of Obrafuor’s successful “Kasiebo” album but received no returns on her investment.

2. @Drake Rights to the said ‘KILLER CUT’ sound were never relinquished to @IamObrafuor and was used by Edward Nana Poku Osei aka Hamma, Producer of Obrafuors album on Obrafuor’s song as he did with others.— #ChaleWote2023 (@Accradotalt) April 19, 2023

According to her, Obrafuor should pay her back before suing anyone else. Ayisha Modi also claimed that she cursed Obrafuor and that karma would catch up with him until he tells the truth about her investment.

Hello @Drake the intellectual property more specifically the ‘KILLER CUT’ sound which was sampled
in your song “Calling My Name” belongs to me Mantse Aryeequaye and not to @IamObrafuo.— #ChaleWote2023 (@Accradotalt) April 19, 2023

“Concert party @mobrafour make sure you pay me back all the money I Ayisha Modi invested in ur Album 13 years ago before you sue someone wai,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Nature will catch up with u walaii Ofoui. See who is suing someone. I cursed u. You will not have no peace until u come out and tell the world the truth about how I invested in ur KASIEBO ALBUM,” she further alleged.
