Captain Prince Kofi Amoabeng (Rtd) recently spoke out against the Bank of Ghana’s decision to shut down his financial institution, stating that it was a flawed decision. Mr. Amoabeng contended that the funds used to shut down UT Bank and other struggling institutions in 2017 could have been better employed in rescuing the struggling local banks.
He stated, “I remain convinced that it was an erroneous decision to liquidate the bank. I was not even the CEO at the time. Currently, Ghana is in the process of seeking a bailout, and it is unfortunate that we could not save a flourishing company. It is possible that the reports submitted to the authorities were riddled with false information and negativity.
“A bailout was necessary because, if a bank owed the government about GH¢800 million and GH¢2.2 billion was expended in shutting it down, then those funds could have been allocated to the bank to enable it to restructure under government oversight and settle its debts over a five-year period.”
