AV – Thug Love (Full Album)

Written by on 02/12/2022

AV’s debut project is a thrilling collection of mellow Afropop bops. A year after the release of his breakthrough single, 2021’s “Big Thug Boys,” AV (born Adindu Victor) remains fascinated by the mechanics of attraction and romance as well as the rewards and trade-offs of his hedonistic pursuits. All of this, paired with a rigorous approach to songwriting that mines the details of his experiences navigating relationships and entanglements have helped establish AV as one of the foremost confessional musicians operating in Afropop. On his debut project, Thug Love, AV leans into a more reflective, mellow vibe. The smoky, delicate soundscape of the project’s five tracks allows even AV’s most casual utterances to carry the weight of the world. “Thug Love” is a graceful declaration of love built on a simple drum and bass pattern while “No Dey Form” sees the singer lean into his sentimental side, asking a romantic interest to stay with him. Splattered in between these moments of vulnerability are potent reminders of the Benin-born singer’s ability to craft groovy, inescapable songs that reflect his innermost desires: Victony joins for an airy amapiano-influenced ode to booze and women on “B&B (Booze & Bumbum)”.
