ASEAN Summit Converges in Phnom Penh

Cambodia, this year’s chair for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), is hosting the weekend summit in Phnom Penh — the group’s first in-person meeting since the Covid pandemic.

In a reportage “As major powers meet in Asia…” by Simone McCarthy, she covers the meeting of world leaders in Phnom Penh. Alongside a summit of ASEAN leaders followed by a meeting of the Group of 20 (G20) this coming week in Bali, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Bangkok is another crucial event in the Southeast Asia calendar.

The writer predicts the leader’s attendance from Russia and China and how their meeting at the G20 will help make decisions for their country’s interests in 2023 and beyond.

Building Peace

Besides establishing strong economic cooperation, ASEAN is also in ongoing dialogue with nations to establish peace.

“We want to get more [nations] to sign the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation,” said Kung Phoak, Cambodia’s Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia is a peace treaty among Southeast Asian countries established in 1976.

About Cambodia

The national flower: Romduol, a small yellowish-white flower, is the national flower of the Kingdom of Cambodia via the proclamation of a royal decree by King Sihamoni of Cambodia in 2005. The Khmer common name is “Romduol” and it has a scientific name “Metralla mesnyi”.
