Tinariwen, DakhaBrakha To Perform At Global Arts Live

Global Arts Live is making an appearance this year with another list of a spectacular lineups. Opening with Adriana Caloanhotto, its calendar of events spreading across 4 months (Sept-Dec) will feature 18 demanding musical items.

These international artists are curated for their specialised sound and fine artistry. There is no such thing as another one of them in the world, hence, being included in the program this year.

Here are the selection of our editors:

DakhaBrakha, September 18

Drones, beats, and towering black lamb’s-wool hats all serve as a striking backdrop to the Ukrainian folk-punk quartet DakhaBrakha. With one foot in the urban avant-garde and the other rooted in Ukrainian village culture, the group’s self-proclaimed “ethno-chaos” is a refreshingly novel vision of Eastern European roots music. Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates an edgy global sound. Tinariwen, 5 October

A sensational live band, Tinariwen electrifies traditional Tuareg melodies with edgy blues, rock, Berber, and Arabic influences, producing a gritty, hypnotic sound. Garcia Peoples will open.

As is the painful paradox, if you consider that while Tinariwen were busy criss-crossing the globe on their recent triumphant tours (160 concerts played in the past three years), expanding their audience on all five continents, becoming one of the latest musical phenomena of truly universal calibre, the frontiers that encircle their desert home were closing down and double-locking, forcing them into exile to record this their 8th album.

Fouad Boussouf, 14 October

Choreographer Fouad Boussouf blends hip-hop, contemporary dance, and new circus with traditional forms of his native Morocco. The esteemed creator presents the US premiere of Näss, which translates as “people” in Arabic, a work at the crossroads of frenetic modernity and ancestral rituals. Inspired by the mysticism of the Gnawa tradition and the regional dances of taskiwine and regadda, Boussouf questions his own roots while revealing a universal dimension where the power of community is championed above inevitable struggle and strife. “I composed Näss like a breath,” says Boussouf, “which reminds us how important it is to be firmly rooted in one’s land in order to feel its vibrations.”

Arooj Aftab, 29 October

Her distinctive musical dialect draws on jazz, minimalism, Hindustani classical music, and neo-Sufi sounds. In 2022, she became the first Pakistani artist to win a Grammy when she won the Best Global Music Performance award. Her latest album, Vulture Prince , has received rave reviews, earning a coveted spot on the Best Albums of 2021 lists from NPR, Time, and the Guardian, among others.

Zakir Hussain, the acknowledged master of the Indian tabla, and Niladri Kumar, the young star sitarist, are at the very top of their form, and together represent the very essence of music: rhythm and melody.
