A Dark & Psychedelic Album: Morricone Segreto

Written by on 03/08/2022

For the feature of the month of August, we are highlighting a short documentary released by CAM Sugar & Decca Records. As we tap our feet impatiently waiting for Morricone’s World Tour to arrive at our shores later this year, let’s start with a brief documentary on what some of his earliest professional counterparts have to say about this composition genius.

The Documentary Film

This film is made specifically to commemorate what would have been Ennio Morricone’s 92nd birthday. From the very start of the film, it was obvious that we get to hear what his closest and earliest collaborators say about working with Morricone.

Morricone’s so-called ‘Dream Team’ – comprising Argentinean organist Giorgio Carnini, guitarist and composer Bruno Battisti D’Amario, saxophonist and arranger Gianni Oddi, pianist and composer Enrico Pieranunzi and vocalist Edda Dell’Orso – convene for a special listening session of Morricone’s first posthumous album, Morricone Segreto, released in Nov 2020.

Reunited for the first time at his studio in Rome – in the historic Forum Studios founded in 1970 – Armando Trovajoli, Luis Bacalov and Piero Piccioni reminisced about his glittering career and shared stories on writing iconic scores spanning more than six decades. Considered a real “temple of the soundtrack”, they characterised the legendary sound that made him into a worldwide phenomenon.

“Watching the documentary “Morricone Segreto – Celebrating Ennio Morricone: The Secrets Behind His Genuis” feels very much like unraveling an expensive present. Knowing how rich in timbre his compositions are, I wasn’t sure his first posthumous release would be any good. For the better, it would sound like what you’d hear at a dedication party. But after listening to some of the tracks in this documentary, I was sure it is made out of pure love for an iconic friend who deserves everything,” said Monica Tong, editor-in-chief of Music Press Asia.
