Seong-Jin Cho to Perform at Gilmore International Piano Festival 2022

Written by on 09/05/2022

Deutsche Grammophon exclusive artist Seong-Jin Cho presents a solo recital at Chenery Auditorium (Kalamazoo, Michigan) as part of the 2022 Gilmore International Piano Festival, opening with two much-loved works by Ravel. The slow, stately pace of the Pavane pour une infante défunte suggests the graceful Renaissance dance from which it takes its name. Renowned for its technical challenges, Gaspard de la nuit is a suite of three movements full of varying pianistic colours, ranging from the watery evocations of Ondine to the frenzied, dissonant portrait of a mischievous imp in Scarbo, via the mournful atmosphere of Le Gibet.

Cho then moves on to the four Scherzos of Chopin, works whose fusion of virtuosic pianism and drama has long attracted both pianists and audiences. He enjoys playing the four as a cycle, because they are all so different from one another, and because there is such contrast within each individual work. Cho recently recorded the Scherzos for Deutsche Grammophon, pairing them with the same composer’s Piano Concerto No. 2 on an album released last year.
