Joko Anwar’s ‘Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion’ will premiere this August

Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion, the sequel to director Joko Anwar’s award-winning horror film Pengabdi Setan (Satan’s Slave), will premiere in Indonesian cinemas this August.

Anwar revealed the premiere date of August 4 in an Instagram post last week with a caption that reads “All waits come to an end. Slavery does not” – a possible hint at the plot for the sequel.
The director had previously shared a first-look image from the film that shows two pocong, or shroud ghosts, lying on a mat, visible in the flame of a match clutched in an unknown person’s hand.

Anwar’s 2017 movie Satan’s Slave was a remake of a 1980 Indonesian film of the same name by horror filmmaker Sisworo Gautama Putra. Its plot centered around the horrors faced by a father and his four children when their mother, dead from a mysterious illness, returns to haunt them.
Satan’s Slave took home seven Festival Film Indonesia awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction, from a total of 13 nominations that year.
Anwar confirmed the sequel’s title and 2022 release window in January, but the sequel had been rumoured to be in the works since September 2019. At the time, Rapi Films producer Sunil Samtani told CNN Indonesia that the company was ready to work on the sequel to Satan’s Slave, but filming was postponed due to Anwar’s busy filming schedule for Perempuan Tanah Jahanam (also titled Impetigore) and Gundala.
Anwar was recently tapped to helm an upcoming film adaptation of author Charles Beaumont’s Fritzchen. The English-language film will reportedly blend elements of sci-fi and horror, and will be based on a 1953 short story by the American author Beaumont, which is about a young boy and his experience with a creature on a beach.
